It Looked Like Spilt Milk was introduced at the same time as Brown's own Goodnight Moon and The Growing Tree from Ruth Krauss—three books that helped form the foundation of picture-book literature and continue to stand the test of by: It Looked Like Spilt Milk is an excellent book.
Students become familiar with pictures of ice cream cones, rabbits, pigs, tree, squirrels, birds, sail boats, clouds, angels and the great hornet. The book exposes children to the different shapes of clouds. At the end of the book children learn the shape is not spilt milk; rather it is a cloud!/5.
The young child aged 1 1/2 to whom I read this book absolutely loved it. He doesn't yet speak, but he understands spoken English. He seemed to find the illustrations magical, making lots of exclamation sounds and babbles of delight. And of a group of books, It Looked Like Spilt Milk is the one he chose to have read repeatedly/5().
Children are kept guessing until the surprise ending, and will be encouraged to improvise similar games of their own. After reading It Looked Like Spilt Milk, students enjoy studying real clouds, identifying different shapes.
The shapes, and resulting book, students create are very tactile. It Looked Like Spilt Milk is one of my very favorite children's storytime books. As a teacher, I used this book to do a whole theme in teaching. We blot painted w/the bright royal blue paper and white paint and I asked the children (2/) what their picture looked like, Brand: Turtleback Books.
